As many as 28.2 per cent of people aged above 15 in Karnataka are tobacco consumers, with the use of tobacco in male population pegged at 39.8 per cent and in female population at 16.3 per cent, says the Global Adult Tobacco Survey (GATS) for Karnataka (2009-10).

The estimates based on the report, released here on Tuesday, put the total number of tobacco users in Karnataka at over 1.5 crore, which makes it one of the States with a high rate of tobacco consumption. The report says that nearly one in every three adults and one in every two male adults in Karnataka either smokes or chews tobacco. Consumption of tobacco in non-smoking forms is high among women, accounting for 16 p.c.

  Passive smoking

GATS results suggest that those exposed to passive smoking too is high in Karnataka, with 44.3 per cent of adults at home and 37.2 per cent in public places exposed to it. Over 92 per cent of adults believe that smoking and consuming tobacco through non-smoking means causes serious health risks. However, only 37.6 per cent of smokers and 41 per cent of people who consume tobacco through non-smoking means have thought about quitting.

The event had victims who have survived tobacco-related cancers narrating their suffering and presented a memorandum to Chief Minister Jagadish Shettar with six demands, including ban on sale of ghutka, imposition of higher taxes on tobacco products and putting an end to indirect advertising of tobacco products.
