Quebec opens door on hike in tobacco tax

Health Minister Réjean Hébert left the door open Wednesday to a hike in the tax Quebecers pay on cigarettes and other tobacco products.

“You will see in the budget speech,” Hébert said when asked to comment on a campaign by health professionals, pointing out Quebec now has the lowest tobacco tax in Canada.

Hébert added that he cannot speak for Finance Minister Nicolas Marceau, who delivers his first budget speech next Tuesday, reports The Gazette.

“We will see next week,” Hébert said.
