Contraband cigarettes depot busted in North Bulgaria

Customs officers in the Northern Bulgarian city of Ruse seized nearly one and a half master-case of contraband cigarettes on October 16, the press office of the National Customs Agency (NCA) announced for FOCUS News Agency. A garage in the city was turned into a warehouse for distribution of illegal tobacco products without excise stamps. The seized cigarettes were of the brands Korsair and President.

They were hidden in a wardrobe in the premise rented by a 59-year-old man with initials N.H., who confessed that the cigarettes belonged to him. Authorities seized a total of 712 boxes of cigarettes, worth BGN 5,340, while the unpaid excise duty on the tobacco products is estimated at around BGN 2,700. N.H. rented the garage of his neighbour some eight months ago.

The owner of the garage said he did not know anything about the origin of the cigarettes. The renter assumed the entire responsibility over the illegal activity. N.H. was imposed a fine of BGN 1,000. A pre-court proceeding has been initiated on the case.
