The 57-year-old from Mattawan, near Kalamazoo, told daughter Lauren, 23, and son Jamie, 25, that if they finished the Detroit Free Press Marathon this year, he'd be finished with smoking.
With that, “Team Run to Quit smoking” started training.
For the Trail family, finishing the marathon was the culmination of years of persuasion.
“I don't like running,” said Jamie, who is a third-year law student at Michigan State.
He said he has been trying to get his dad to stop smoking since he can remember and wasn't going to pass up his chance.
Lauren Trail and Jamie Trail participated today with a record number of people 19,749 under clear blue skies. They finished coming in just over 4:20.
“We stuck with it, so he should stick with it,” Lauren Trail said about her father quitting.
“I want him to be around if I ever have kids,” Jamie Trail said.
Wiping tears from her eyes, Dave's wife, Karen, said she's wanted him to quit since their children were born and is hopeful he will now.
Up until today, Dave Trail smoked a pack to a pack and a half of cigarettes a day. He's been smoking for 30 years. Now he vows to give stopping his best shot. “It makes me feel good that they’re concerned about me,” he said.
