Proposed cigarette tax should be targeted at tobacco companies, commenters say

The proposed legislation to raise taxes $1 per pack on cigarettes is establishing a following with state lawmakers and health orginizations, according to an Associated Press report.
The legislation proposed by Rep. Patricia Todd (D-Birmingham) would raise the tax of cigarettes in Alabama to $1.42, which would generate $205 million for the state annually.
Many al.com readers sounded off about Rep. Todd's press conference about the issue on Tuesday.
Here's what you had to say:
"Who does this tax mostly affect? Why, the poor, that's who. Now, don't get me wrong. If the intent is to reduce consumption, then how about we do something about the companies instead of the users? Aren't they punished enough with the risk of lung cancer?"- ego360

"Is it possible to elect any politicians-- Republican or Democrat-- that are interested in something other than raising taxes? Keep raising taxes and you will get what they have in New York. Their taxes are so high people drive to Indian reservations to buy cigarettes for $2.00 a pack and nobody gets any taxes."- maxxjd

"Raising taxes on cigarettes is good, it generates money for the state. People aren't going to quit smoking. When they shut down the court houses and you cannot get your case filed, or your ticket paid, etc.... because the court house is closed on the only day you have off, you'll be glad about the extra taxes. If you don't smoke and ruin your health, then you have nothing to worry about."- bama569

"They only want to tax poor people. Smoking rates are highest among the poor . It makes since in a way, since the poor use public services the most, better they should pay for them. I just wish these people would be honest and just come on out and call it what it is. It's not a cigarette tax. It's a ghetto and trailor park tax."-Martin Kaine
