Montgomery County Firefighters say it was a cigarette that caused a large house fire in Rockville on Sunday afternoon. Firefighters say two people were inside the home when the fire started in the den. An 85 year old man was burned across forty percent of his chest and is listed in serious condition. An 84 year old woman also escaped from the home with the help of a neighbor who ran inside to save the woman.
Assistant Fire Chief Scott Graham says investigators found the cigarette that is believed to have ignited the fire in the den. Graham says the cigarette was not a Fire-Safe cigarette. According to Maryland law only Fire-Safe cigarettes can be sold in the state. Officials say they are considered safer because of an ability in most instances to self extinguish, reducing the chance of fire.
Two firefighters sustain minor injured fighting the blaze.
