Three stores cited for selling tobacco to minors



Three Downers Grove store clerks were arrested and issued citations for selling tobacco to a minor after a village-wide tobacco compliance sweep, Downers Grove police said Thursday.

Clerks were arrested and cited at the following locations:

Walgreen’s located in the 6200 block of Belmont, where a 19-year-old clerk sold tobacco products to a minor at 4:15 p.m. on Feb. 22, police said.
Speedway convenience store, located in the 5000 block of Fairview Avenue, where a 19-year-old clerk sold tobacco products to a minor at about 5:45 p.m. on Feb. 22, according to police.
DG Foodmart, located in the 2000 block of Ogden Avenue, where a 49-year-old clerk sold tobacco products to a minor at about 4:25 p.m. on Feb. 22, police reports indicate.
Only three of 38 total businesses checked sold tobacco to a minor, who was working as an agent of the Downers Grove police department, police said.

The fine for selling tobacco to a minor is $200 for the first offense, with the amount climbing to $400 and $600 for each subsequent offense in a 12 month period, according to state law.
